Invitations

Here are some great ways to summon dinosaurs

Design options

Paint the invitation paper with a cup of cold coffee to give it an aged look
Carefully burn around the edges using a candle.

Inside

Cut a card into the shape of a dinosaur or a dinosaur egg
Write the invitation on the back.

Special touch

Buy dinosaur skeletons from a toy store or $2 shop
Write a different piece of information (date, venue etc) on each piece.
Post all the pieces to your guest, and have them make up the model to reveal the invitation.

Decorations

Time Machine

Make a time machine out of bits and pieces around the house.
Use big boxes, tin foil, and vacuum cleaner pipes.
Park the machine at your front gate, and make every child travel back in time.

Cave

Use black fabric to turn your front door into the entrance of a cave.
Add big rocks and some pot plants, use cotton wool around the edges to make cobwebs.
Make a paper mural out of brown paper.

Jungle

Turn your house into a jungle, fill it with pot plants, ferns, and broken branches.
Hang ropes from the ceiling to look like vines, and add soft toy animals hiding in the trees.

Dinosaur Footprints

Cut out giant dinosaur footprints from brown paper.
Guests follow these footprints to your house.

Fossil Makers

Give each child a piece of air dry clay and let them create their own Jurassic fossils. Roll the piece of clay out flat, then press in leaves, shells, feathers, and other natural treasures. When the items are removed, they leave an imprint just like a real fossil. As the name suggests, air dry clay does not need firing, it simply dries hard. (Air dry clay can be purchased from art supply stores and some toy stores)

Sandy Volcano

Make an exploding volcano in your sandpit. (If you don't have a sand pit, get an old baby bath or a large tub and fill it with sand). Have the children build the volcano out of sand, and then push a yoghurt container into the peak. When everyone's ready, put a tablespoon of baking soda into the yoghurt pot, and then pour on some vinegar. For extra effect, add a few drops of red food colouring to the vinegar before you pour. Children love watching it "explode", and it will work over and over.

Activities

Pin the Tooth on the Dinosaur - Enlarge an image of an open-mouth T-Rex. Make enough paper teeth for each child and put their name on front. Blindfold and turn child three times before letting them go. The winner is the child whos paper tooth is the closest.

Dinosaur Hunt

Have all the children close their eyes, while the birthday child hides a stuffed or plastic dinosaur. Have children hunt for the dinosaur. The child that finds it first gets a party prize and/or the opportunity to hide the dinosaur next.

Hatch the Dinosaur egg

Older children divide into two teams and relay from one end of the room to the other. They have to "hatch" a balloon egg by sitting, lying or squishing the balloon egg...anything they can to pop it.. First team to hatch all their eggs wins.

Dinosaur Egg Relay

You will need a spoon for each child and lots of hard boiled, coloured, eggs. Divide children into two teams and give each child a spoon and each team an egg. On your mark the first person in each line races to the other end of the room and back, keeping the egg on the spoon. When they return they must then transfer their egg onto the next team members spoon and repeat until all players have finished.
