From humble beginnings on a picturesque site on Auckland’s North Shore, the Chelsea Sugar Refinery has grown to be one of New Zealand’s icons, a grocery brand that few of the country’s homes would be without.

Chelsea Sugar has been enjoyed by generations of families, delivering reliable high quality products not only to New Zealand homes, but to the Food Service industry, Business to Business and Export markets in the Asia Pacific region.

Chelsea Sugar has been operating since 1884, and employs approximately 250 staff. We have two sites, the main refinery situated on the banks of the Waitemata Harbour in Birkenhead, North Shore, Auckland and a blending plant around the corner in Glenfield. Take a virtual tour of our sugar refinery.

Our business successfully blends tradition and progress - a proven combination for us. We strive to incorporate our long-standing reputation for commitment to quality and service, alongside innovation and the desire to grow our business.

Raw unrefined sugar cane is imported from Queensland, Australia. We receive a sugar shipment of approximate 27,000 tonnes every 6 weeks. If we packed the equivalent sugar volume into our 1.5kg White Sugar packs, it would be enough to cover the length of New Zealand twice.
